Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if my child will be absent from school?

Parents must provide a written excuse explaining the reason for the absence on the day the student returns. Even if you call or email, a written note is still required.

What is considered an excused absence?

Excused absences include illness, family emergencies, medical appointments, religious observances, and other reasons approved by the principal or superintendent. Vacations and oversleeping are unexcused.

How does chronic absenteeism affect my student?

Students missing 10% or more of the school year (excused or unexcused) are considered chronically absent, which may trigger interventions or consequences.

Are students allowed to use cell phones during the school day?

No. Personal electronic devices must be powered off and stored in lockers or backpacks during the school day, unless required by a teacher or medical plan.

What happens if a student is caught using a phone during school hours?

Consequences increase with each offense, starting with a warning and escalating to the device being held in the office, parental pickup, or suspension for repeated violations.

What is the school’s dress code policy?

Clothing must be safe, respectful, and appropriate for the learning environment. Items promoting drugs, hate symbols, or containing vulgar language are prohibited. Head coverings are allowed if protected under law.

Can my child wear a hoodie or hat?

Hoods may be worn in the classroom at the teacher’s discretion. Hats with wide brims or neck gaiters are not allowed in the building.

How are behavioral incidents handled on the school bus?

All Code of Conduct expectations apply on buses. Misconduct may result in warnings, loss of bus privileges, or further disciplinary action.

What should students do if they witness bullying or harassment?

Students are encouraged to “see something, say something” by reporting concerns to a trusted adult or using the district’s reporting form. All reports are taken seriously and investigated.

How does the school address student fights or physical altercations?

Fighting is considered violent conduct and may result in suspension, parent contact, and possible police involvement depending on the severity.

What are the consequences for vaping or using tobacco on school property?

Students found using or possessing vaping or tobacco products face in-school suspension, prevention counseling, and escalating consequences for repeat offenses.

Can students protest or walk out of class?

Peaceful expression is allowed if it does not disrupt school operations or create safety risks. Sit-ins or walkouts that interrupt the educational process are prohibited.

What rights do students have during disciplinary actions?

Students have the right to due process, including the ability to explain their version of events and be treated fairly according to Education Law 3214.

How does the district support students with disabilities during discipline?

Students with disabilities are protected by additional legal safeguards. Discipline decisions will follow IDEA and NYS Education Law, with consideration of the student’s IEP and behavioral needs.

Who do I contact with questions about the Code of Conduct?

You can contact your building principal or the district office. For bullying, discrimination, or harassment concerns, reach out to the school’s Dignity Act Coordinator.
