Why Attendance Matters

Consistent school attendance is essential for student learning, growth, and achievement. When students attend regularly, they build the habits and relationships that support lifelong success.

  • Missing just 2 days per month can lead to a student being considered chronically absent

  • Students with strong attendance perform better academically, socially, and emotionally

  • Even excused absences count toward chronic absenteeism under New York State Education Department (NYSED) guidelines

School Arrival Times

Elementary School
Students should arrive no earlier than 8:55 AM, unless participating in the breakfast program, which begins at 8:45 AM. Supervision is not available before these times. A pass is required to enter a classroom before 8:55 AM.

Middle/High School
Students may arrive no earlier than 7:15 AM.

Submitting Attendance Notes Through ParentSquare

Notification of Absences
If your child is marked absent during morning attendance, you will receive a notification by text, email, app alert, or phone call depending on your selected settings.

  • Middle/High School: Notifications sent around 9:10 AM

  • Elementary School: Notifications sent around 10:10 AM
Make sure to manage your notification preferences in ParentSquare.

Submitting Excuses
Please submit excuses for full-day absences directly through ParentSquare by responding to the absence notification or using the “Alerts” feature in the ParentSquare app.
We will no longer accept verbal excuses over the phone for full-day absences.

Late Arrivals and Early Pickups
For late arrivals or early dismissals, provide a written excuse directly to the main or nurse’s office at drop-off or pick-up. These notes can also be sent via email to the appropriate school office.

Reporting Absences Without ParentSquare Access

If you are unable to use ParentSquare, please send a written excuse the day your child returns to school. Include the student’s full name, date(s) of absence, reason for the absence, and parent or guardian signature.
Notes can be delivered in person or emailed to the main office.

Types of Absences

Excused Absences
Examples include personal illness or medical appointment, family emergency or funeral, religious observance, court appearance, approved school-sponsored activity, delayed school bus arrival or inclement weather, principal-approved educational experiences

Unexcused Absences
Examples include vacations or travel, oversleeping or missing the bus, babysitting or working, skipping class or truancy

Note: Both excused and unexcused absences count toward chronic absenteeism under NYS guidelines.

Chronic Absenteeism and Monthly Attendance Notices

Our district regularly monitors attendance in accordance with state expectations.

Monthly Review
At the end of each month from October through June, student attendance data is reviewed.

Letters Sent Home
Families of students with 2 or more absences per month will receive a letter via ParentSquare.

These letters are based on the NYS definition of chronic absenteeism, which identifies students with less than 90% attendance as at risk. The letters are not disciplinary, but meant to inform and support families.

Late Arrivals and Early Dismissals

Students arriving late must be signed in by an adult at the main or nurse’s office.
Early dismissals require an adult to sign out the student and provide a valid reason.
Frequent tardiness or early dismissals may result in a mandatory conference with the classroom teacher and principal.
